So You Want to Talk to Strangers? Interviewing Fundamentals with Lauren Ober

Talking to strangers can be intimidating. What if we say the wrong thing? What if we offend them? What if they don’t like us?! Well, if you can’t talk to strangers, how are you going to make a podcast? (Unless all of your guests are your mom.) Regardless of whether you want to make a beautiful serial narrative show like In The Dark, or a smart chat show like Still Processing, or you want to be the next Terry Gross, you’re going to have to get comfortable with the interview.

In this two-hour workshop, we’ll get you acquainted with the art of the interview. Sure, we talk to people all day long. But extracting interesting information from a person you don’t know while making it seem like you’re just having a fun, breezy conversation is a skill. This workshop will help you with the fundamentals, like research prep, question selection, interview framing, and making a guest feel comfortable. We’ll also listen to a few examples of best-practice interviews, as well as some not-so-great examples. And we can’t let you leave without doing some interviewing of your own. So come prepared to talk to some strangers and leave thinking more critically about the crucial role that the interview plays in making a great show.

PRICING

The cost of this two-hour workshop is $50. Sign up below!

We're offering scholarships for this workshop. Learn more and apply.

This Is Your Pilot Speaking: Making Your First Episode with Matt Collette

Starting out in podcasting, the advice is often simple: Just go make something. But what if there’s a step between a brilliant podcast idea and a brand new show?

It can be incredibly valuable to take time to think critically about your ideas, try some out, and ask for feedback from real listeners. Then you’ll think about that feedback, make some changes, and have a better show than what you started with.

In other words: You’re piloting. Piloting is something that big media companies almost always do. But that doesn’t mean the process needs to be expensive or time-consuming. Instead, it’s a way to focus your ideas and, hopefully, create a more specific and resonant show for your listeners.

In this four-hour workshop, you’ll dig into the five steps of piloting, from setting intentions to launch. You’ll leave with a framework for thinking about how to develop, test, tweak, and launch new ideas - and you’ll have a chance to try each step with your own ideas.

PRICING

The cost of this four-hour workshop is $100. Sign up below!

We're offering scholarships for this workshop. Learn more and apply.

Finetuning Your Podcast Audience with Juleyka Lantigua-Williams

Podcast listening is growing every day in the United States and around the world. It’s no longer possible to make a podcast “for everyone.” So the question is: who are you making your podcast for? And, more importantly, how are you being intentional about it?

This two-hour workshop will hone in on how to better define the audience for your podcast, why and how to build a profile for your ideal listener, and how to address, engage, and grow that listener. You’ll also learn how to create and learn from a playlist of shows aligned with yours, as well as how to map out your audience’s listening habits. With real-world examples and hands-on exercises, you will walk away with a clear picture of your ideal listener and strategies for how to get your podcast in their ear.

We recommend this workshop for people with an idea for a show - or who are already publishing episodes - that want to dive deeper into their purpose and planning.
